Spring Flowering Trees Trivia

Question 1: Why are there no leaves?

These flowering trees are mostly deciduous, with the exception of Rhodoleia. Deciduous trees are dormant in winter, with new flowers and leaves appearing in Spring. What makes cherry trees so attractive is that the flowers bloom en masse before the leaves.

Question 2: Number of flowers increases with age?

Small-sized trees are planted because they adapt more quickly to the local environment than mature trees. However, it will take a few years of patient and care until they reach maturity and produce more flowers in Spring.

Project Background

There is a recent trend to admire spring flowers in Hong Kong. Apart from local native spring flowers, e.g. Rhodoleia and Callery Pear, etc, many visitors are also attracted to overseas during cherry trees blossoming season. Cherry trees grow best in Northern temperate regions and need chill winter period for flowering. In Hong Kong, the cherry trees planted at Cheung Chau, Kadoorie Farm and Tai Mo Shan Country Park have likewise attracted many visitors during the blossoming season in recent years though the scale of blossoms in these areas is relatively small.

The Sustainable Lantau Blueprint (The Blueprint) announced by the Government in June 2017 ( http://www.lantau.gov.hk/ ), dedicated part of Lantau Island to be used for conservation with sustainable leisure and recreational purposes. In view of the cool climate, good transport connectivity as well as the synergy with the existing tourist attractions in Ngong Ping, the Civil Engineering and Development Department arranged planting of cherry trees and native spring-flowering trees in Ngong Ping for visitors'enjoyment during the blossoming season.

The Civil Engineering and Development Department held a planting ceremony for the landscape improvement works in Ngong Ping on 30 January 2018 to give impetus to the landscape improvement works.
