Report Title : Direct Shear Testing of a Hong Kong Soil under Various Applied Matric Suctions (1992), 241 p. (Reprinted, 1995)

Abstract

This report presents the results of research into the direct shear properties of a saprolitic soil under various applied matric suctions. The soil tested was a completely decomposed fine ash tuff from Tseung Kwan O. Previous research programs have shown that the shear strength of a soil increases as the matric suction was increased. The present research program is to be performed on a relatively coarse grained soil and one of the concerns being investigated relates to whether or not the proposed shear strength equation applies for this soil. Recommendations for further research are also given.
