Marine sand is a valuable and important resource in Hong Kong. From 1990 to the end of 2003, about 270 millions m3 of marine sand had been extracted from the seabed in Hong Kong waters and used as marine fill for Hong Kong reclamation projects. The reclaimed areas have been valuable land resources for infrastructure developments such as the Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap Kok, the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre at Wan Chai, and the Theme Park at Penny's Bay.

Drawing MFC-001 shows the used marine borrow areas and the sand reserves for future use in Hong Kong.

Personnel involving directly or indirectly in dredging works in Hong Kong should refer to the details set out in the "Guidance Note on Incidents Involving Explosive Ordnance During Marine Dredging".
