Hong Kong Slope Safety System Honoured with Grand Award of the HKIE 50th Anniversary Legacy Award (Innovation Category)

Date of Award: 03/04/2025

The Hong Kong Slope Safety System has received the Grand Award in the Innovation Category of the HKIE 50th Anniversary Legacy Award, in recognition of its pioneering contributions to landslide risk management and engineering innovation.

Established by the Geotechnical Engineering Office in 1977, the Hong Kong Slope Safety System is a transformative system that holistically manages landslide risk by integrating both engineering and non-engineering risk management concepts under multi-pronged strategies. In response to emerging technologies and challenges, the system has continuously evolved by incorporating innovative technologies such as digital twins, artificial intelligence, remote sensing and robotics for the advancement of both slope safety and engineering practice.

Over the past five decades, the system has significantly reduced the overall landslide risk and landslide fatalities in Hong Kong, despite population growth, slope degradation and more frequent extreme weather brought about by climate change. It not only safeguards lives and infrastructure, but also lays a solid foundation for the sustainable development of Hong Kong.
