Reconstruction of Hong Kong Observatory's (HKO) Tai Po Kau Tide Gauge Station - The Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA) Award 2025 for Small Projects - President's Prize

Date of Award: 31/10/2025

We are delighted that the Reconstruction of the HKO Tai Po Kau Tide Gauge Station project was awarded the Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA) Award 2025 for Small Projects - President's Prize.

The project involved the reconstruction of a key tide monitoring facility for HKO which was originally built in the 1960s. The design is based on the architectural concept "Revealing the Tip of Iceberg," which mimics the form of an iceberg façade to raise public awareness of climate change. A fair-faced concrete core anchors the structure, while a cladding system of perforated aluminium and mirrored stainless steel mimics ice crystallisation and interacts with sunlight to animate the façade. An exposed stilling well marks historical storm surges, alerting public to past impacts. CEDD also enhanced the existing facilities of Tai Po Railway Pier to harmonise the reconstructed station, such as the flooring patterns and pier furniture design, echoing the iceberg-inspired design.
