Road Widening and Retrofitting Noise Barriers on Tai Po Road (Sha Tin Section) – Winner of the “NEC Transport Project of the Year 2021” Award

Date of Award: 24/06/2021

The main objective of the Road Widening and Retrofitting Noise Barriers on Tai Po Road (Sha Tin Section) (TPR-ST) project is to widen a 1.1km section of TPR-ST from a dual two-lane carriageway to a dual three-lane carriageway and to modify the Sha Tin Rural Committee Road interchange in order to cope with the increasing traffic demand and minimise traffic congestion.  Furthermore, with the provision of noise mitigation measures, the works will benefit over 2,200 dwellings alongside TPR-ST for a reduction of traffic noise impact upon project completion.

The project locates at the densely developed Sha Tin District and is being implemented under serious constraints and challenges arousing from busy live traffic, congested underground utilities, nuisance to the community, etc.  Despite the challenges, by adopting "New Engineering Contract" (NEC) form and upholding a close partnering relationship among CEDD, the consultants and the contractor, the project team has demonstrated how the strong spirit of mutual trust and cooperation has helped overcoming the hurdles and facilitated the project execution.  The efforts of the project team have not only been recognised by the industry, but also awarded the "NEC Transport Project of the Year 2021" by the NEC Users' Group of the United Kingdom.
