(post date: 23/1/2015)
The Project Manager of the Hong Kong Island and Islands Development Office of the Civil Engineering and Development Department, Mr Edwin Tong (centre), attends the agreement signing ceremony for the study on topside development at the Hong Kong Boundary Crossing Facilities island of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge today (January 23).

The Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) today (January 23) signed a consultancy agreement with Ove Arup and Partners Hong Kong Ltd for the planning, engineering and architectural study for the topside development at the Hong Kong Boundary Crossing Facilities (HKBCF) island of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Project Manager of the Hong Kong Island and Islands Development Office of the CEDD, Mr Edwin Tong, said, "With its proximity to the Hong Kong International Airport, the 130-hectare HKBCF island will serve as a gateway for Hong Kong and the western Pearl River Delta with potential for developing a 'bridgehead economy'.

"With appropriate developments, not only can the unique geographical advantage of the island be fully capitalised on, but also synergy can be created together with the airport, AsiaWorld-Expo and other tourist and business destinations on Lantau, providing job opportunities for Hong Kong as a whole."

The study is co-managed by the CEDD and the Planning Department. It will take about 25 months to complete. The consultant is required to ascertain the feasibility and optimise the scope and scale of the proposed commercial development and the development of other economic activities through utilisation of topside and underground space on the island, recommend the overall development concept including the market positioning and operation strategy, and undertake environmental and technical assessments.
