Report Title : Investigation of Some Selected Landslide Incidents in 1997 (Volume 3) (1999), 145 p.

Author : Halcrow Asia Partnership Ltd.

Abstract

This GEO Report consists of four Landslide Study Reports on the investigation of selected slope failures that occurred in 1997. The investigations were carried out by Halcrow Asia Partnership Ltd (HAP) for the Geotechnical Engineering Office as part of the 1997 Landslip Investigation Consultancy.

Section 1 of this report presents the findings of a detailed study of two landslides (GEO Incident Nos. ME97/7/69 and ME97/7/5) which occurred at Tao Fung Shan Christian Cemetery on 2 July 1997. Landslide debris affected residential property below the northern and eastern sides of the cemetery, but no fatalities or injuries were reported.

Section 2 of this report presents the findings of a detailed study of a landslide (GEO Incident No. MW97/6/15) which occurred on 4 June 1997 at Chung Shan Terrace, Kwai Chung. The landslide involved the failure of an unregistered fill body and resulted in the collapse of a buried retaining wall. Approximately 450 m3 of debris from the landslide completely blocked Lai King Hill Road and an access road to Chung Shan Terrace. A car travelling along the access road was carried by landslide debris to the far side of Lai King Hill Road. No fatalities or injuries were reported.

Section 3 of this report presents the findings of a detailed study of a landslide (GEO Incident No. MW97/5/18) which occurred on 8 May 1997 on a partly modified natural hillside between Kwai Chung Public School (KCPS) and Glorious Praise Christian Centre (GPCC), Kwok Shui Road, Kwai Chung. Debris from the landslide accumulated at the toe of the slope adjacent to GPCC. The landslide also undermined part of a fill platform of KCPS at the crest of the slope. No fatalities or injuries were reported.

Section 4 of this report presents the findings of a detailed study of a landslide (GEO Incident No. MW97/7/10) which occurred on 2 July 1997 near Lido Beach, Castle Peak Road. The landslide occurred on a partly modified natural hillside above Castle Peak Road and affected an adjacent registered fill slope. Approximately 750 m3 of landslide debris completely blocked Castle Peak Road and an access road to six abandoned properties. Debris also spread downslope below Castle Peak Road into the gardens and swimming pool of the "Riviera Apartments". No fatalities were reported but eight people were injured and taken to hospital. Two of the injured were detained and the others were discharged after treatment.
