Report Title : Factors Affecting Sinkhole Formation (1994), 37 p. (Reprinted, 1995)

Author : Y.C. Chan

Abstract

This report reviews the mechanisms of sinkhole formation and the likely seepage forces involved. It considers those factors in relation to the geological history of Yuen Long and attempts to assess the potential problems.

Based on the geological history of Yuen Long area and the findings in this review, it can be concluded that wide spread sinkhole formation is unlikely in Yuen Long area as long as groundwater table remains above rockhead.

Three alleged sinkholes recently observed in Yuen Long area are all associated with construction activities. Their formation mechanisms are being examined in detail so that if necessary, procedures can be introduced to prevent similar occurrence in the future.
