Abstract

This report presents a general review of rainfall and landslides in 1985, and provides details of the notable landslides. In summary, rainfall amounts for various durations during 1985 can be considered as normal except for a slightly heavier rainfall period from the 24th to 27th June. Over the whole year, 254 landslides and related incidents were reported to the GCO District Divisions, and the damage resulting from these incidents are: seven persons injured, 274 huts evacuated, six buildings partially closed and 49 sections of road and access closed. Most of these damages occurred during or shortly after rainstorms. The two most intense and damaging storms occurred during the approach of Typhoon Hal on 25th June and Typhoon Tess on 6th September, when No. 8 Tropical Cyclone Warnings and Landslip Warnings were issued. The Landslip Warning was also issued on 27th August.
